Easter 2009

We had a great first Easter together (first Easter as a married couple, that is)! Both Publix and the Wine shop were closed on Easter, so John was able to be with me all day! We slept in on Sunday morning. Then, John made pancakes and bacon for breakfast. After we ate, we got ready and went to the Botanical Gardens here in Huntsville.

The Botanical Gardens is beautiful place! Almost everything was in bloom. We saw a 32 year old Bonsai Tree. The historical Dogwood tree (150 years old) was in full bloom. Throughout the trails, there were big bugs created out of metal and/or wood. The big bugs included ladybugs, ants, spiders, and dragonflies. There were information cards outside each bug that told facts about that particular bug. On display throughout the gardens, you could also see bugs created by grade school children. These bugs were cardboard but decorated with odd items, such as crushed soda cans, bottle caps, computer keyboard parts, etc. Some of them were really creative and neat!

There were other neat factoids about the different types of flowers, plants, and trees. They had a section dedicated to only herbs. This section told you the herb name and what Native Americans used the herb for. We saw a lot of herbs that were to help fight against cancer. It was really interesting! Also in the herb section, there was a huge sun-dial. The directions told you to stand on the current month's first letter, and your shadow would tell you the approximate time of day. We tried it out and it was very accurate!

Another section of the gardens was called The Garden of Hope. This is where cancer survivers and supporters could plant a garden to represent their feelings. These could be feelings about having cancer, or a loved one's feelings about supporting someone going through cancer. They had information next to the names of the many cancer survivors telling about the type of cancer they fought and about the battle. There were also pictures of people who had lost their battle with cancer. This made me think about the people I know who have had, are fighting, and who have lost their lives to cancer. It was a special place.

After our stroll through the gardens, we came home to catch up on some old epoisodes of some TV shows we had on the DVR from when we went to California. It was a very good day!
